West Island Community Resource Centre is a community-based, non-profit organization that offers West Island citizens resources and information by phone, email and in person. They also offer resource publications and free legal and tax clinics several times a year. Call 514-694-6404.

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) is a low-cost non-profit organization that helps with weight-loss support. They meet every Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Cedar Heights Park Chalet, 20 Robinsdale Ave. in Pointe-Claire. Visit tops.org.

West Island Cancer Wellness Centre. Receive compassionate support and can participate in programs such as yoga, massage therapy, counselling, and more, for free. Quebec Chapter of the Canadian Celiac Association is a non-profit organization that is a national voice for people who are adversely affected by gluten, who are dedicated to improving diagnosis and quality of life. One of the Meals on Wheels kitchens in Pierrefonds needs a kitchen coordinator. Tasks include contacting new clients referred by the CLSC, scheduling, communications with the volunteer team and occasional meetings. Minimum age: 55.

Volunteer West Island is looking for a bilingual volunteer to make friendly phone calls to isolated seniors on Friday mornings from our office in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue. Minimum age: 16.

Volunteers are needed on Saturday mornings at the Nova Thrift Shop in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue. Tasks involve receiving and sorting donated goods, setting up displays, greeting clients, etc. Minimum age: 18.

Strangers in the Night is hosting a dinner and concert under the stars on Aug. 25 to raise funds for three community-based, not-for-profit organizations in the West Island: The Miriam Foundation, Lymphoma Canada, and The West Island Women’s Shelter. This year our guests will be entertained by Boy George and The Culture Club, at the Gala’s new venue in Pierrefonds. A total of 75 volunteers are needed to fill these roles: greet guests, busboys/busgirls, parking attendants, backstage crew and green team. Shifts are from 3 p.m. to midnight. Minimum age: 18.

The 2018 Ribfest in Pierrefonds will soon be here. On Aug. 16-20, volunteers are needed for general set up of the event, arranging tables and chairs, cleaning up tables, replenishing supplies, helping with front door, collecting donations, handing out flyers and security at the door. Bartenders with experience are needed. Minimum age: 16.

An English-speaking man in his late 50s would like friendly visits from a volunteer to break his isolation. He is a calm and soft-spoken former professional musician, who lives in the Pointe-Claire area. He has reduced mobility and likes to chat, and is also open to doing other activities.

A Pointe-Claire resident in her 90s is living with Alzheimer’s. She would love to share some time with a caring, compassionate female volunteer who could visit her at her residence. She has done a lot of travelling and loves music from the 1920s, 30s and 40s. She has a small collection of CDs you can listen to. She is an animal lover, and dogs are welcome at her residence.

A very quiet 78-year-old woman with low vision, who lives in Ste-Geneviève, would benefit from a female volunteer to visit her and accompany her on outings to break her isolation. She is pretty mobile and speaks French.

A senior Pierrefonds woman is looking for a female volunteer to break her isolation through home visits. She has dementia and is very quiet and lonely. She speaks English and walks with a walker.
