By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, May 5: Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav, expressed concern over the escalating number of deaths due to heart disease, cancer, and high blood pressure in recent years, emphasising the importance of their management.

Speaking at the 'Diabetes Nepal International Conference' convened by the Nepal Diabetes Organisation in Kathmandu on Saturday, he underscored the significance of diabetes control.

"While diabetes may not be eliminated, its impact can be mitigated through a disciplined lifestyle, dietary adjustments, regular physical activity, routine health assessments, and timely medication," said Vice President Yadav. "Failure to identify, diagnose, manage, and prevent this ailment promptly can lead to various complications," he added.

Highlighting the potential severity of diabetes-related complications affecting vital organs such as the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, gums, feet, and nerves, he stressed the importance of awareness to avert such issues.

"In a developing nation like Nepal, where access to healthcare is limited and periodic medical screenings are not widespread, there exists a concerning trend," said Vice President Yadav. "The rise in diabetes cases, particularly in rural households, due to insufficient screening is worrisome," he added.

Citing alarming global statistics indicating a surge in diabetes cases over the past three decades, Vice President Yadav referenced a report by the World Health Organization (WHO) which estimates that 422 million individuals worldwide have diabetes, with the majority residing in low- and middle-income countries. Additionally, an estimated 1.5 million deaths occur annually directly due to diabetes.

"These figures underscore a lack of seriousness towards personal health among the populace," said Vice President Yadav, urging individuals to prioritise awareness and take proactive measures toward their health and well-being. "With appropriate medication and a healthy lifestyle, the long-term effects and complications of diabetes can be managed," he said.

He advocated for preventive measures such as adopting a nutritious diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and abstaining from smoking to curb the progression of diabetes.

Given the constraints in resources and infrastructure, Vice President Yadav emphasised the importance of organisations like 'Diabetes Nepal' in extending healthcare services to rural areas through medical screenings, counselling, and treatment. "Such organisations play a crucial role, particularly when governmental efforts face delays," he said.

In recognition of exemplary efforts, VP Yadav presented the 'Diabetes Achievement Award-2024' to Dhulikhel Hospital in Kavre on behalf of the organising committee.
