A very high flying kite caused a brief disruption for air traffic coming into Victoria’s Inner Harbour on Tuesday afternoon.
Victoria police were alerted by NAV Canada, which operates the country’s civil air navigation system, about the problem around 2 p.m.
It was estimated the kite was flying at about 1000 feet (300m) over Esquimalt.
CHEK News photographer Rod Park tracked the kite flyer down in the yard of Ecole Victor-Brodeur on Head Street not far from the water as he was slowly bringing it back down.
“The police showed up,” said Neil Parman.
“I do want to know the rules, I’m not trying to break the law.”
Canada’s Aviation Regulation 602.45 doesn’t lay out specific distances but states “No person shall fly a model aircraft or a kite or launch a model rocket or a rocket of a type used in a fireworks display into cloud or in a manner that is or is likely to be hazardous to aviation safety.”
The disruption was brief and did not appear to directly affect any flights arriving at Victoria’s Harbour Airport.
VicPD continue to investigate and will be in contact with Transport Canada regarding the case.
