Abingdon High School senior Rives Boltwood bolted his way into the record book on Saturday.
Boltwood won the boys 3,200-meter run at the prestigious Dogwood Track Classic at Lannigan Field in Charlotteville, Virginia.
His winning time of 9:00.29 was the fastest ever recorded in the event among distance runners in the history of far Southwest Virginia.
“Dogwood is the premier track meet in Virginia, so it’s a huge accomplishment for Rives to win and a great representation of our program,” said Abingdon coach Brent Swiney.
Will Venable of Broughton High School in Raleigh, North Carolina – the alma mater of basketball legend “Pistol” Pete Maravich – was second in 9:01.44.
Loudoun Valley’s Ty Blair (9:02.32) earned bronze.

Gregory Poisson of Abingdon was 17th in 9:18.45.
Boltwood has signed with Furman University.
“To win considering the race went out slower than we hoped it would shows what a smart race Rives ran,” Swiney said. “It’s exciting knowing there’s more in the tank if the race sets up a little better for a faster time. I really look forward to the next month and seeing what he’s able to achieve.”
Abingdon has had four runners break 9:20 in the 3,200 in the last three seasons as Boltwood and Poisson did on Saturday.
The University of Virginia’s Isaac Thiessen (9:12, 2022) and Georgia’s Jack Bundy (9:14, 2023) were the others.
Josie Jackson (girls 800, 17th, 2:17.38; 1,600, 44th, 5:18.05) and Amanda Ferrante (girls 800, 22nd, 2:18.83; 1,600, 17th, 5:05) also represented AHS in the event.
