Reading, traveling, mushroom and berry picking most popular pastimes among Latvians

Reading books and magazines, traveling, mushroom and berry picking are the most popular pastimes among Latvians, according to a poll carried out by Lacplesa Alus Daritava brewery in cooperation with SKDS polling company, informs LETA.

The TOP 10 of most popular hobbies in Latvia also includes gardening, going to theaters and concerts, cooking, cycling, solving crossword puzzles, photography and swimming.

 

Playing board games, doing handicrafts, hunting and fishing, singing and dancing, visiting art galleries, painting and drawing and going to sports games also are quite popular pastimes in Latvia.

 

SKDS head and sociologist Arnis Kaktins said it was good that most people in Latvia had a hobby. At the same time, the poll showed that the amount of time people can dedicate to their hobbies is decreasing.

 

Both women and men read books but reading is more popular among women (54%) than among men (31%). Traveling is a hobby for 40% of women and 35% of men, mushroom and berry picking is the favorite pastime for 35% of women and 31% of men, and gardening is a hobby for 32% of women and 24% of men.

 

Reading is the most popular pastime for the respondents in the age group between 55 years and 74 years, but young people aged 18-24 years also read a lot (42%). Women tend to read books on a daily basis more frequently than men - 29% against 16%, and Russian-speaking respondents read books more frequently than ethnic Latvians - 29% against 19%.

 

Younger and more wealthy people tend to spend more time with their friends than other categories of respondents, and every fourth respondent said they liked their salaried jobs and regarded their work also as a hobby.

 

The online poll was carried out on February 12-16 among 1,005 respondents.
